Managing Difficult IUC Cases

Course Description
This session is intended for practices that are currently performing IUC insertions and removals. Topics discussed include new guidelines for the timing of IUC insertion after pregnancy, management of IUC side effects and complications, tips for managing cervical stenosis and pain relief during placement, and dealing with rare emergencies during insertion such as vasovagal syncope and uterine perforation.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Review guidelines for the appropriate timing of IUC insertion for women using no contraceptive method, using other methods, and those who are post-partum.
- List 3 steps in the management of vasovagal syncope.
- List 3 interventions to improve the likelihood of successful IUC insertion in women with cervical stenosis.
- Explain the management of women who have cervical and upper genital tract infections when an IUC is in place.

This is an activity offered by the California Family Health Council, Inc., a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this program can earn up to 1.5 contact hours of Category I credits toward the California Medical Association’s Certification in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician's Recognition Award. The American Academy of Physician Assistants and the American College of Nurse Midwives accept Category I CME approval.
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP 12241 for up to 1.8 contact hours.
CFHC is designated as a provider of Category I continuing education contact hours in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Health Educators attending this program may report up to 1.5 Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) contact hours.
The California Family Health Council, Inc., provider number PCE3165, is an approved provider of continuing education for MFT and LCSW licensure requirements in California.
