HIV Update
with Michael Policar, M.D., M.P.H.
Recorded June 20, 2007
Course Description
This session will review the evidence that compelled the CDC to change its recommendations, including the specific screening strategy outlined by the CDC. Point of care HIV screening test products, and their use, also will be reviewed. In addition, public health and clinical management issues arising from differences between California state regulations and the new CDC recommendations will be discussed.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- List three reasons that the CDC supports widespread routine HIV screening, rather than a targeted screening strategy
- List the three main causes of HIV infection in women, and how this profile has changed over time
- List the situations when point of care HIV screening is preferred to laboratory testing of a serum sample
- Compare the accuracy of point of care HIV tests to ELISA tests performed in a laboratory
- Review three major recommendations for HIV screening of pregnant women
