Making Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) Available in Your Practice

Course Description

This session is intended for practices that do not yet offer insertion of intrauterine contraceptives (IUCs) or the contraceptive implant (Implanon).  Topics discussed include changing indications for use of IUCs and contraceptive implants, development of clinic protocols before introduction of these methods into your practice, Family PACT clinical practice guidelines and payment policies for each method, as well as opportunities for training in IUC and Implant placement.  

Course Objectives

At the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  1. List 3 conditions previously considered to be contraindications to IUCs but are no longer categorized as such.
  2. List 2 advantages and 2 disadavantages for each IUC type and the contraceptive implant.
  3. List 3 steps that should be taken to prepare a practice to add IUC and contraceptive implant insertion as clinical services.
  4. Explain the process for being trained in the insertion and removal of each IUC type as well as the contraceptive implant.

CME Logo This is an activity offered by the California Family Health Council, Inc., a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this program can earn up to 1.5 contact hours of Category I credits toward the California Medical Association’s Certification in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician's Recognition Award. The American Academy of Physician Assistants and the American College of Nurse Midwives accept Category I CME approval.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP 12241 for up to 1.8 contact hours.
